THE MODESTO GREEK FOLK DANCERS

The Modesto Greek Folk Dancers were originally formed in 1976. Prior to that time, there were various dance groups in Modesto associated with the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church that performed at the annual Greek Food Festival and the State Fair. Occasional dance classes were also offered. 1976, however, marked the first time that a comprehensive organized Greek folk dance program was established.

Over the years, several hundred young people have been a part of this outstanding program.  Currently, we have seven active dance groups with approximately 150 current dancers.

The Modesto Greek Folk Dance Group is a beautiful aspect of the Hellenic culture, traditions and Orthodox Christian faith that have been preserved by those of Hellenic descent in the Modesto area.  This program serves to teach and preserve the dances, costumes, and traditions of various regions of Greece and to educate our young people so that they will keep this inheritance alive and vibrant for future generations.

The following is a outline of the history of the Modesto Greek Folk Dancers, including the various groups that have danced over the years, a list of directors, the various scholarships and awards won by both individuals and individual groups, the community outreach projects we participate in, the Dance Support Group, Scholarships we offer, and the clergy of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Parish who have been a great support to the program.
