In 1999, Katherine Velthoen, a young adult member of the Modesto Greek Folk Dancers and a parishioner of the Church of the Annunciation in Modesto, California was killed in a drive-by shooting.  At FDF 2000, the first Katherine Velthoen Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Irene Fousekis of San Francisco, California.  The Modesto Greek Folk Dancers, along with the Annunciation parish, has committed itself to sponsoring this scholarship in memory of one of its beloved dancers/directors.
